Big Kahuna Tiki Huts had the pleasure of working with a client in St. Louis, Missouri.  Our team of thatchers hauled fresh cut Florida palm fronds all the way to Missouri to rethatch three tiki huts.

Our thatchers removed the old palm fronds, hauled away the palm frond debris, and rethatched the tiki huts using fresh cut Florida palm fronds individually attaching them to the purlins using 2″ galvanized staples.

Big Kahuna Tiki Huts had the honor of working with Matthew Brown and members of Eagles Scout Troop 774 of Jupiter, Florida, as Matthew worked toward his Eagle Scout ranking.

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) awards this highest honor to Scouts who demonstrate leadership while performing an extensive project in their community. The project must benefit an organization other than the BSA. Also, it cannot be performed for an individual or a business; cannot be solely a fund-raising project; and cannot be a commercial effort.

Matthew’s project included the total reconstruction of two hurricane damaged Seminole Indian chiki huts located at Busch Wildlife Sanctuary in Jupiter, Florida.

Busch Wildlife Sanctuary is a facility dedicated to bringing wildlife and people together to foster awareness of the value and diversity of Florida’s natural resources. The sanctuary offers a unique opportunity to experience native Florida wildlife and natural ecosystems up close. Their animal hospital treats over 4,000 injured animals annually.

Matthew’s job was to plan, organize, lead and manage the project. He invested 220 hours of his time to complete the project from start to finish. This included raising over $5,000 for the project.

“With the help of my family, friends, and fellow scouts, we completed the chiki hut project within two days,” says Matthew. He added, ” It took two days of hard labor and organization, including clearing shrubs and debris, mulching, replacing crossbeams and supports, and individually attaching new palm fronds on both structures.”

Big Kahuna Tiki Huts worked with the Scouts by assisting in the thatching of the fresh cut palm fronds that makes up the roof of the chiki hut.

The results were successful and Matthew was awarded his Eagle Scout rank.  The title of Eagle Scout is held for life, thus giving rise to the phrase, “Once an Eagle, always an Eagle.” Congratulations to Matthew and his fellow Scouts.

Read the news article from AP (American Press Photo News) apphotonew.com written by Correspondent, Michael Ramer from Ft. Pierce, Florida on 5-11-09 in which he writes the following:
BIG KAHUNA SAVES THE DAY

When the tropical breezes blowing off the Indian River just across from the Ft Pierce Inlet, make you feel like life doesn’t get any better than this, the last thing you want to happen is the roof falling down into your Margarita! That’s why the Original Tiki Bar & Restaurant called Big Kahuna to repair their roof. With a section of the bar closed off, and the oh so familiar blue tarp stretched across the ceiling, employees of Big Kahuna Tiki Huts went to work. Using fresh cut Florida palm fronds, they had guests enjoying rum runners and fish sandwiches in no time.www.originaltikibar.com

With clients such as Ritz Carlton Hotels, The City of Naples, FL, and Hyatt Resort’s it’s no wonder management at The Original Tiki Bar & Restaurant called. Besides being featured on TV’s Extreme Home Makeovers, they do new construction along with repairs and restorations for both commercial and residential clients.

Check out their website at: http://www.palmhuts.com/. That night, while the band played and the sun sunk low over the marina, everybody forgot all the hole in the roof just hours earlier, and enjoyed the beauty of another Treasure Coast evening, all thanks to Big Kahuna Tiki Huts.

Big Kahuna Tiki Huts was hired by Brevard Community College in Cocoa FL to rethatch their four pre-existing tiki huts.  The huts are located on Clear Lake behind the Roger W. Dobson Building (Bldg. 13).  There are four tiki huts located in this area.  The largest hut was a 31 foot x 30 foot and there were three other huts 22 foot x 13 foot each.

Students can enjoy being outdoor year around while finding shade under the huts or shelter from the rain.  It is also a nice gathering place to relax, socialize, or study.

Our crew of thatchers began their work in early August.  First they had to strip all the old palm fronds off each of the tiki huts in preparation for the new thatching.  The old palms are individually removed and hauled away.  Once the huts are stripped of their old palms, they are ready to be thatched with fresh cut Florida palm fronds.  Each new palm frond is individually attached to the structure of the tiki hut.
